Unfortunately, at this moment Sun Java Desktop does not support DVD
playback. The Movie Player (called Totem) supports on gstreamer for DVD
playback and the current version of gstreamer in JDS lacks the plugins
for DVD playback. At this moment we do not know if a future release
will contain the plugins or not. In order to be able to play DVDs on JDS, we advise you to follow the next workaround. Pleae note that you can follow this procedure at your own risk. If any errors are introduced, or if the suggested workaround does not completely work, Sun Microsystems will not help you fix it. Also please note that Sun Microsystems does not maintain any of the software mentioned below and therefore cannot be held responsible for any errors or bugs in them. DVD playback can be enabled by installing another movie player, e.g. Xine or MPlayer. A possible procedure for installing Xine may be this. Download these rpms : ( or the most current versions) http://cambuca.ldhs.cetuc.puc-rio.br/xine/curl-7.10.3-1.i386 .rpm http://cambuca.ldhs.cetuc.puc-rio.br/xine/libdvdcss-1.2.8-1. network.i386.rpm http://cambuca.ldhs.cetuc.puc-rio.br/xine/w32codec-0.52-1.i3 86.rpm http://cambuca.ldhs.cetuc.puc-rio.br/xine/xine-ui-0.9.23cvs- 031230.i586.rpm http://cambuca.ldhs.cetuc.puc-rio.br/xine/libxine1-1_cvs-040 109.i586.rpm Install the termcap package by clicking on the Launch button and then Applications -> system Tools -> Install/Remove Software. Next upgrade the installed curl version on JDS using rpm -Uhv curl-7.10.3-1.i386.rpm Then, install the other packages as root using rpm -i libdvdcss-1.2.8-1.network.i386.rpm libxine1-1_cvs-040109.i586.rpm w32codec-0.52-1.i386.rpm xine-ui-0.9.23cvs-031230.i586.rpm To play a DVD, start xine by opening a terminal window and typing xine In the xine toolbar click the DVD button to start playing a DVD.
