JDSHelp Community Site How to enable a broadband Internet
connection using PPPoE
Before
configuring PPPoE, first the network card of the PC or laptop to which
the modem is attached needs to be configured so it can communicate with
the modem. The modem has a network interface to which the network card
of the PC or laptop is connected. This network interface has an IP
address. The network card of the PC or laptop needs to have an IP
address in the same C-class as the IP address of the network interface
of the modem.
For instance, if the network interface of the modem has the IP
address 192.168.0.254, the network card of the PC or laptop needs to
have an IP address 192.168.0.xxx where xxx is a number between 1 and
253. In case the IP address of the network interface of the modem is
not know, the ISP to which the ADSL connection will be established,
needs to provide it.
To configure the network card of the PC or laptop, follow these steps :
1. Click the [Launch] button and select "Preferences" - "System".
2. In the "system-settings:///" window, double click the "Hardware"
icon.
3. In the "Hardware" window, double click the "Network Card" icon and
provide the password of the root user if prompted for it.
4. In the "Yast2" window, click the [Change] buttons below the "Already
configured devices" section.
5. In the "Network cards configuration overview" window, click the
[Edit] button.
6. Select the "Static address setup" option and fill out the IP
address in the "IP Address" text field. In the "Subnet mask" field,
fill out the value "255.255.255.0" (without the quotes).
7. Click the [Next] button and then the [Finish] button.
8. Completely logout from Sun Java Desktop System and reboot the PC or
laptop to make the changes effective.
To set up Sun Java Desktop System with a broadband Internet connection
using PPPoE, follow these steps:

Settings."
