Welcome to the Java Desktop System GNU/Linux Community Website
Enterprise UsersYou have seen news articles promoting the Java Desktop System (JDS) as the first alternative to Microsoft Windows in the past 15 years. You may have even read that somewhere on this web site. JDS is the first commercial desktop platform alternative to Windows. Sun Microsystems has developed enterprise desktops for twenty years and has the best solutions for enterprises with Intel based computers. Sun has always marketed its product to enterprise customers such as Boeing, Intel, Ericsson and thousands of others. If you are looking for a higher level of security, a low learning curve and an excellent ROI on initial acquisition costs and TCO, then you will appreciate JDS. We Use Windows and Have a Mix of Different Machines - Will They All Migrate?Probably not. The more generic the system, the more it will migrate. The more specialized or proprietary the system, the more likely it won't work. Generally, if you have computers using Windows 98, your systems will likely migrate. We've had luck bunching similar systems and migrating them to JDS at the same time. You can also ask Sun to make custom changes to JDS for hardware that needs special drivers for a variety of devices. Once you have your built ready, you can usually deploy JDS in a surprisingly short time frame. Why Would I Want to Change to JDS?JDS provides you with a better Desktop than Microsoft, the costs are lower and the administration tools and backoffice applications are superior to anyone. JDS also has interoperability built into every desktop. You can deploy JDS in either a homogeneous or heterogeneous environment. You don't have to get rid of Microsoft Windows or UNIX, OS/2, Macintosh or other operating systems. Also, you get a comparable desktop to Windows for between 10 to 20% of what you would pay Microsoft. If you have used Sun before, then you know the quality of the product. We're a Small Business - Would Sun be Interested in Us?Sun works with Small to Medium Sized Businesses. You may notice that they have made a major commitment to the Intel architecure by offering 64 bit AMD Opteron workstaions and servers. They also developed JDS Linux for the x86 platform, Solaris 10 with the JDS Desktop for x86 and resell both Novell SUSE and Red Hat Enterprise Linux. The Jave Enterprise System (JES) runs on a multitude of platforms and provides a major cost advantage for small to medium size businesses.
